Stop right here if you have heard this before: the Houston Texans have a quarterback problem. Again.
The Texans seemed set for the foreseeable future with the stellar play of rookie Deshaun Watson. However, the first-year signal-caller suffered an ACL injury and will miss the remainder of the season. This couldn’t have happened at the worst time, as the Texans are currently in a tight fight with both the Tennessee Titans and the Jacksonville Jaguars for the AFC South lead.
The Texans have Tom Savage and Matt McGloin as options right now. But let’s be honest. None of them are good enough to be an NFL starter, especially on a team that actually has something to play with. And there aren’t many options available on free agent market… except for one. Yes, football fans. We are talking about Colin Kaepernick.
Kaepernick is yet to sign with a team this season despite multiple injuries to the quarterback. Andrew Luck and Aaron Rodgers are not likely to play anymore this season. Watson enhanced that list, too. Carson Palmer has at least six weeks left in his recovery. And none of these teams even sniffed the chance to sign Kaepernick. Houston’s head coach Bill O’Brien said the team “entertained” the chance to sign Kaep, but at the same time, he said the team was considering every single possibility to improve their QB position.
Seriously? So are there almost 70 QUARTERBACKS better than Colin Kaepernick? Yeah, that’s not true. If anything, there are roughly 20 or 25 QBs better than Kaep. So there must be another reason why teams are not calling him. Everybody knows it, but we are not going to mention it.
The point here is the Texans MUST DO SOMETHING. Having Savage and McGloin is not going to cut it, especially if they want to remain alive on the Division race. But considering the Jaguars and the Titans already have a two-game lead, Houston must do something to spark the offense. And Kaepernick is the only player who could change the team. He has a similar skill set compared to Watson, and he can make plays with both his arms and his legs.
Houston has the final call though. If they are smart and if they want to avoid tanking, then they should call Kaep ASAP. He’s the only viable option to keep fighting for the AFC South title this season.
