Sebastian Giovinco is one of the best players in MLS. He deservedly won the Landon Donovan MVP Award in 2015, and several experts tabbed him as the main candidate to repeat in 2016. He got off to a slow start, however, and he was suddenly seen as nothing more than a one-hit wonder.
The Italian forward even went through an eight-game scoring drought. Fans began to worry about his performance, but he bounced back in a big way. It seems he’s on fire once again after scoring four goals over the past two matches.
Giovinco broke out of his slump with a spectacular hat-trick against DC United two weeks ago, in which he showed his quality time and time again. He netted two free-kicks in the first half, and he also added a third one late in the game.
Not done with that, the former Juventus player had another solid performance this past Sunday against Columbus Crew. Giovinco scored a great goal with the outside of his right foot, and added two assists as TFC won by a 3-0 score. He looked in-sync with Jozy Altidore who scored his first goal of the year.
Giovinco is quickly showing the same level he had in his MVP campaign. Could this be a sign of things to come for him in the future? He feels far more comfortable on the pitch, and this can only mean good things for Toronto FC. The Canadian franchise currently sits third in the Eastern Conference with 30 points in 21 matches, and an in-form Giovinco will make them even more dangerous. They could easily make a deep run at the top of the East standings.
Furthermore, Giovinco might not be at the top of the MVP ladder, but a few more weeks playing like this should give him a nice boost. He’s certainly a talented player, and he shouldn’t have problem to end the regular season as one of the top performers in MLS just like he did last season.
He might not be the MVP once again, but he’s certainly playing like one in recent weeks. And that’s all that matters for Toronto FC.
