Gerrard Ends Liverpool Career Without a Trophy. And Is a Top 4 Finish a Realistic Possibility? The Reds Roundup for April 23, 2015

While Steven Gerrard will be heading off to La La Land without a trophy, there is still the slight chance of a top 4 finish left to play for. The Reds basically need to win out to overtake City, but with the crushing defeat to Villa on their minds, can they get their head in the game quick enough to take 9 points out of their next 3 games before a visit to Stamford Bridge?

Sad Gerrard is sad 🙁

Everything’s the worst:

It was a horrible weekend for Reds fans as their last chance to give Gerrard a trophy fell through and they were forced to end another season without any hardware. They had a few chances in the game, but in the end they never looked like a team that should be headed to a final (unlike in the Capital One semis when we looked great vs. Chelsea) and now Liverpool fans across the world are putting all  their hopes into somehow overcoming City for the final Champions League spot. Based on what we saw this weekend, that’s a long shot as well.

Quick turnaround:

  • Saturday 4/25: Liverpool @ West Brom – 10:00 a.m. EST
  • Tuesday, 4/28: Liverpool @ Hull City – 2:45 p.m. EST
  • Saturday, 5/2: Liverpool vs. QPR – 10:00 a.m. EST

The Reds need to get over their FA Cup disappointment quickly as any more lost points will ultimately lead to the dreaded Euro tournament (which also hasn’t given the Reds much to cheer for). They face the tough task of having to play 3 games in a 7 day span prior to their May 10th match vs. Chelsea. If they can pull off three wins in a row, it could inject some life and hope of a top four finish into a side that desperately needs something to cheer for. The action starts this weekend with a visit to the Hawthorns to take on West Brom.West Brom is safe from relegation at this point, but they’re coming off a 2-0 win vs Leicester and will be playing as a team with nothing to lose. It’s going to be tough to pull ahead of City at this point since there are not many games left, but we just need to keep our heads up and push forward. If we can make it into the top 4, who knows the type of squad we’ll put together over the summer. Champions league is a big draw for many players, and with every target choosing between Liverpool and two or three other squads, it’s a great carrot to dangle in front of any potential transfers. C’mon Reds!
