Liverpool books their place in the final four of the FA cup after a nervy 1-0 win at Blackburn. But if rumors are to be believed (they’re not) both Sterling and Henderson could be headed out this summer. At this point, the only news that could be worse is if it was announced that Balotelli is staying.
COUTINHO HUNGRY!
Huge win at Blackburn:
It was a pretty lame first half, and neither team was able to capitalize on the few chances they had. Sakho went down early and Rodgers was forced to bring on Toure (who had a horrible game at Arsenal) but the D was able to keep a clean sheet for the first 45. In the second half, Blackburn came out on fire and Mignolet had to make 2 huge saves within the first 90 seconds to keep his clean sheet. Liverpool finally woke up about 20 minutes in, and in the 70th minute Coutinho was able to slot one home after he and Henderson played a great give and go combo. Liverpool had a few other opportunities after this goal, but they put it either high or wide every time. They also needed to rely on Mignolet once again towards the end of the game, but the Belgian was up to the challenge. It wasn’t the prettiest goal, it wasn’t the prettiest game, but in the end Liverpool were able to win an FA Cup match away from home for the fourth time this season. Now it’s on to Wembley to take on Aston Villa in the semis on April 19. Good luck Reds
Newcastle on Monday:
As the season winds down, the Reds are in a real state of flux. If they improve their form and Man City deteriorates over these last few games, there’s still a chance of Champion’s League football. If they continue to play without any urgency in their remaining EPL games, they may even slide out of Europa League contention (which is both a blessing and a curse). Reds fans have been through a roller coaster of a season this year, and it will be weird to root for United in the Manchester Derby this weekend, but a win by the Red Devils would definitely help motivate the Reds in Monday afternoon’s clash. Hopefully Liverpool can ride their FA Cup momentum and pull out a W, which with a City loss would place the Reds only 4 points behind the fourth place spot (again). With only 6 games to go, there’s still a lot up in the air, and a fourth place finish this year would be even more impressive than last year’s second place finish since this season started out so miserably. Here’s hoping that the Reds turn it up once again for the final games. If not, who knows might be headed out the door.
Around the Interwebs:
- Clip of the week goes to this great Brendan Rodgers/Eminem mashup.
- Now Henderson is having contract issues too. Could he really be headed to City?
- As Real Madrid admit they’re eyeing up Sterling, are Liverpool now lining up Barcelona’s Pedro as a replacement?
- The Pjanic rumors are consistent. Is that a good sign?
- More transfer rumors. This time the Reds are monitoring Monaco’s Geoffrey Kondogbia and Leeds’ Sam Byram.
- Mario is being a baby again? Shocking. This time he pulled himself out of the last 2 games due to injury…then sickness.
