Things Begin to Heat Up in the Battle for Second Place: Serie A Review for Mar 14-16

As Roma and Napoli fall once again by suffering defeats at the hands of Sampdoria and Hellas Verona, the teams beneath them would rise to the occasion to create a truly interesting race for second and third place in Serie A. Lazio, Fiorentina and Sampdoria would all win their games and create a 5 point window from 2nd place to 6th place. The team that benefited the most was Lazio who would jump Napoli into third place which results in a Champions League qualifier match. Elsewhere, Milan and Inter Milan would continue their struggles and Juventus would continue their dominance.

Let’s get to the games:

The Palermo-Juventus game would be a great way to kick off action in Serie A this week as it provided another solid match of soccer throughout the 90 minutes. Paulo Dybala and co. would try their all to break down the Juventus deadlock but would be unable to throughout the match. The substitute Alvaro Morata would provide the only goal in this game and continue the Juventus reign of power in Serie A.

Genoa 0 (9-10-7)
Chievo 2 (7-8-12)
Full Time

The Chievo vs Genoa game had all the promise of being an entertaining match of football. The first half was a tactical battle with very few chances being created. The second half saw Chievo lull Genoa to sleep and then attack on the break. Alberto Paloschi would score a brace as Genoa had one of those days where nothing was going their way. In the end, the 2-0 scoreline was a fair result based on how the two teams played.

Atalanta 0 (5-10-12)
Udinese 0 (8-8-10)
Full Time

Udinese and Atalanta have been incredibly dull the last couple of weeks; and things wouldn’t change this weekend either. The two teams have been on horrible runs of form and a draw was the deserved result in this one.

Full Time

Parma would get another week of action in the Serie A against Sassuolo who have been inconsistent at times this year. Verona 2 (8-8-11)
Napoli 0 (13-7-7)
Full Time

The theme of this game was set very early on as the Napoli defense looked to be in shambles from the very get go. The 8th minute brought us our first moment of blooper-esque play as Napoli keeper Mariano Andujar came out of net to make a comical challenge on Luca Toni who easily got around him and almost scored a simple empty netter. Minutes later some poor defensive work came from fill-in right back Giandomenico Mesto as he collided with his own keeper to give Luca Toni an easy tap-in goal. The second half would see another incredibly poor giveaway by Napoli’s David Lopez that would let Hallfredsson run the length of the pitch to pick out Luca Toni for his second goal of the day. The Verona defense would then close themselves in for the remainder of the match and do very well to stymy any Napoli threat.

Inter Milan 1 (9-10-8)
Cesena 1 (4-9-14)
Full Time

With Cagliari earning a point the day before, Cesena knew they had to take something away in this match against a very inconsistent Inter Milan. Cesena would get off to a blazing start with a goal from Defrel in the 30th minute. They would see their lead vanish as Rodrigo Palacio would score early on in the second half and end the game at 1-1.

Torino 0 (9-9-9)
Lazio 2 (15-4-8)
Full Time

Lazio have been in a great run of form and showed the same hunger and determination that they had in their impressive 4-0 win over Fiorentina. The second half would see their biggest weapon Felipe Anderson strike twice with two very impressive goals. Lazio have now surpassed Napoli for third place in the Serie A.

Fiorentina 2 (12-9-6)
AC Milan 1 (8-11-8)
Full Time

AC Milan have a lot of work to do over the summer to try and fix this team. There was a great goal to start the game off coming from Mattia Destro but the 83rd and 89th minute would bring goals from Rodriguez and Joaquin to ultimately sink Milan for their 8th loss of the season.

AS Roma 0 (13-11-3)
Sampdoria 2 (11-12-4)
Full Time

Roma’s offensive struggles continued in this game as the club would lose 2-0 to Sampdoria. Roma came into this game with 5 consecutive draws in the Serie A. The pressure of all the runner ups to their second place would see them crumble in this match as Sampdoria would score two goals and Seydou Keita would be sent off with a red card. Roma need to get it together soon as they are imploding in every match.
