A Small Slate Ends the NCAA Regular Season: NCAA Recap for Mar 9

Four teams clinched NCAA tournament bids on Sunday and two were Top-25 teams. Coastal Carolina and University of North Florida will be a part of the NCAA tournament in 2015, winning the Big South Conference and Atlantic Sun Conference respectively. Another major conference tournament battle terminated as the regular season ended on Sunday.

Illinois State Redbirds 60 (21-12)

Final

University of Northern Iowa overcame an 18 point deficit to beat Illinois State in the Missouri Valley Conference championship game. Nate Buss scored 15 points off of the bench for Northern Iowa and Seth Tuttle had 15 points and nine rebounds. Illinois State was supported by a game high 16 points from Daishon Knight and made 10 three pointers, but Illinois State was outshot 22 to four from the free throw line.  Illinois State will be headed to a non-NCAA tournament postseason bid, while Northern Iowa looks to be a top four seed in the NCAA tournament.

Tulsa Golden Hurricane 62 (21-9)

Final

The American Athletic Conference race is over and SMU is the regular season conference champion, beating Tulsa on Sunday afternoon. Marcus Kennedy scored 16 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and blocked three shots off the bench for the Mustangs and Cannen Cunningham had 12 points and 13 rebounds. James Woodard had 30 points on 10-15 three point field goals and Shaquille Harrison had 10 points, nine rebounds, and nine asssists for Tulsa, but the Golden Hurricane only shot 35.6% from the field and were outshot 19 to eight from the free throw line. SMU will be the top seed in the American Athletic Conference tournament and Tulsa will be the second seed.

Final

Wisconsin’s superb 2014-2015 Big Ten season ended as they routed Ohio State on Sunday afternoon. Frank Kaminsky scored 20 points and Bronson Koenig added 15 points, as the Badgers shot 50% from the field. Ohio State had 17 points from D’Angelo Russell, but Ohio State only shot 34% from the field and had two bench points. Wisconsin is the number one seed in the upcoming Big Ten conference tournament and Ohio State is the sixth seeded team in the tournament.

Nebraska Cornhuskers 61 (13-17)
Final

Maryland survived an upset scare on the road to end the Big Ten regular season, beating Nebraska. The Terrapins were fueled by 21 points from Melo Trimble and 18 points and 12 rebounds from Dez Wells. Nebraska’s upset effort was charged by 26 points from Shavon Shields and 19 points and 10 rebounds from Terran Petteway, but the Cornhuskers only shot 30.5% from the field. Maryland is the second seed in the impending Big Ten conference tournament and Nebraska is the 12th seed and will open the tournament against Penn State.
