ACC Battles Headline a Short Day: NCAA Recap for Mar 5

There were only four games yesterday, but two of them went a long way in deciding the seeding for the ACC Tournament. With only one game to go, it looks like each of the top four seeds are comfortably placed. Three of the top four teams in the conference played last night with two playing each other.

Let’s get to the games:

(23) Ohio State Buckeyes 77 (22-8)
Penn State Nittany Lions 67 (15-15)
Final

Ohio State solidified their position as the third seed in the Big Ten tournament, beating Penn State last night. Potential first team All-Big Ten guard D’Angelo Russell had 28 points for Ohio State, who overcame a halftime deficit for their 11th Big Ten win. Penn State was paced by 17 points from DJ Newbill and 14 points from Ross Travis. Penn State finishes their season with Minnesota while Ohio State wraps up their Big Ten schedule with a tough matchup against Wisconsin.

(12) Notre Dame Fighting Irish 71 (25-5)
(16) Louisville Cardinals 59 (23-7)
Final

In a matchup of two of the four top teams in the ACC, Notre Dame beat Louisville. Demetrius Jackson had 21 points, five rebounds, four steals, and three assists for the Irish who shot 53.5% from the field. Montrezl Harrell had 23 points and 12 rebounds for Louisville, his 11th double-double of the year, but the Cardinals struggled to 4-17 shooting from three point range. Louisville plays ACC regular season champion Virginia to close the regular season and Notre Dame closes their schedule with Clemson.

(24) Providence Friars 79 (21-9)
Seton Hall Pirates 66 (16-13)

Providence was boosted by a double-double from Ben Bentil with 21 points and 10 rebounds, with LaDontae Henton adding 21 points as well. Seton Hall, who is all but eliminated from postseason play, made 10 three pointers but was dominated at the free throw line, making only eight three throws to Providence’s 29. Seton Hall wraps up their Big East slate with Georgetown and Providence will end their regular season with Butler

Wake Forest Demon Deacons 51 (13-17)
(3) Duke Blue Devils 94 (27-3)
Final

Duke continues to roll through the ACC, beating Wake Forest to draw closer to the second seed in the ACC tournament. Duke had four starters in double digit points, but their big contributor was freshman Grayson Allen who exploded for 27 points after only averaging 3.9 points for the season. Wake Forest had a huge game from Codi Miller-McIntyre- 20 points, five assists, four rebounds, and three steals- but only had one other player in double digit points.
