The Calm Before the Storm: NCAA Review for Mar 2

It was a small schedule of games on Sunday, but two conference races were more closely defined in tense matchups.

Let’s get to the games:

(21) SMU Mustangs 73 (23-6)
Connecticut Huskies 81 (17-11)

UConn built on their NCAA resume and created tension on the top of the AAC by beating SMU Sunday afternoon. UConn had 28 points and three steals from Rodney Purvis while Ryan Boatright had 23 points for the Huskies. SMU had 18 points off of the bench from Markus Kennedy, but struggled three point range, only making four of 14 shots. UConn looks to inch closer to an NCAA berth against Memphis and SMU has a one-game takes all for the AAC regular season championship against Tulsa.

Marquette Golden Eagles 66 (11-17)
(25) Providence Friars 77 (20-9)
Final

Providence may have been eliminated from the Big East regular season championship race, but they built on their NCAA tournament resume by beating Marquette on Sunday afternoon. LaDonte Henton scored 25 points for the Friars, who rebounded from a drubbing by Villanova and overcame two of 11 shooting from three point range. Duane Wilson scored 22 points for the Golden Eagles and Matt Carlino added 21 points, but it was not enough to stop a five game losing streak. Marquette turns their focus to St. John’s while Providence looks towards Seton Hall.

Michigan State Spartans 61 (19-10)
(5) Wisconsin Badgers 68 (26-3)
Final

Wisconsin clinched at least a share of the Big Ten regular season title, beating Michigan State on Sunday afternoon. Frank Kaminsky exploded for 31 points, eight rebounds, three blocks, and two steals to pace the Badgers. Bryn Forbes made five three pointers off of the bench for the Spartans, finishing with 21 points, but Michigan State was only four of nine from the free throw line. Michigan State looks to Purdue while Wisconsin has a road game against Minnesota.
