Why Andres Guardado’s Arrival Would Be Good For MLS

Mexican starlet Andres Guardado has been a constant name in recent transfer rumors. The PSV midfielder has been linked with a move to MLS in recent months, but the move is closer than ever to happen. According to MedioTiempo, the former Deportivo star is reportedly thinking about playing in MLS as soon as next season.

The rumors started even before the start of the 2016 Copa America Centenario, but talks have progressed smoothly of late. Several reports indicate Atlanta United FC as front-runners. Teams like Columbus Crew SC and New York Red Bulls also have DP slots available to sign him.

Recent reports indicated there was an offer on the table for Guardado’s services. It would be a three-year deal with a $3 million salary per season. That would make him one of the highest salaries in the league.

Guardado didn’t deny the interest when asked about it by the media. “I will turn 30 in September and I can’t close the door on a growing league and I’m thankful for the interest, it’s flattering,” Guardado said. “At the moment there is nothing, but to have my name mentioned is flattering because of the figures that are there.”

All signs point to Atlanta United starting their MLS history with one of the most coveted central midfielders in Europe playing for them. Frankly, his arrival would be a great sign of progress for MLS. Players in their primes and with a genuine interest in playing stateside don’t grow on trees. Guardado would give the league a sense of importance few players can.

His arrival could also entice other CONCACAF and CONMEBOL internationals to join the league. Sure, Europe has a bigger prestige, but the MLS is quickly growing. Fans are more passionate than ever, attendance is at an all-time high, and so are the TV ratings. The only thing the MLS needs to start inching closer to some of Europe’s best leagues is the quality of players. And Guardado would certainly be a step in the right direction.

Atlanta United needs to make it happen. The MLS, as a league, needs to make it happen. It’s a signing no one will ever regret.
