Gunners Secure Third: Premier League Recap for May 16-18

Arsenal's English midfielder Theo Walcott (C) celebrates after scoring from a deflection with Arsenal's German midfielder Mesut Ozil (L) and Arsenal's French striker Olivier Giroud during the English Premier League football match between Manchester United and Arsenal at Old Trafford in Manchester, northwest England, on May 17, 2015. With the title sealed up, Chelsea seemed to take the week off, and a red card to Cesc Fabregas meant West Brom could pile on the goals. Elsewhere, Manchester United could only pull out a draw against Arsenal at home which likely locks them into the fourth spot meaning early-season qualification will be required to get into the Champions League group stages. Next week will be key to the relegation battle, and multiple teams gave themselves more room above the drop, but the final spot yet to be decided.

Let’s get to the games:

 Southampton (17-5-11) 6
 Aston Villa (8-8-17) 1

Sadio Mane nets the fastest hat-trick in Premier League history to help Southampton to three points that lifts them above Tottenham and greatly improves their chances of European football next season. Mane netted on 13, 14 and 16 minutes, his three goals coming in two minutes 56 seconds, 97 seconds quicker than the previous mark set by Liverpool’s Robbie Fowler. Shane Long added two others in the first half, the second a wonderful chip from nearly 40 yards, and Graziano Pelle volleyed home the sixth in the closing stages. Villa’s defending was a horror show and the only consolation they got from an abject display was a header from Christian Benteke in first-half stoppage time, the Belgian’s 10th goal in his last 11 outings.

 Liverpool (17-6-9) 1
 Crystal Palace (11-9-13) 3

There’s no fairy-tale end to Steven Gerrard’s Anfield career as Palace secure a famous win and their first on this ground in the league in 24 years. The visitors deserved their victory, too, as their speedy forward line gave the Reds’ pedestrian defence trouble all afternoon. Jason Puncheon’s excellent free-kick just before the break cancelled out an Adam Lallana strike with Wilfried Zaha getting the winner in the second half, just 22 seconds after coming on as a substitute. Glenn Murray added a third in stoppage time after his initial penalty had been saved. Gerrard tried his heart out, but there was nothing to rekindle the memories of the Champions League final in Istanbul or the FA Cup final at Cardiff, which was a huge disappointment to the home faithful.

Liverpool controlled 60% of the possession, and had 18 shots on goal, with 4 on target. Crystal Palace controlled 40% of the possession, and had 15 shots on goal, with 6 on target. In the 26th minute, Adam Lallana for Liverpool scored into the part of the goal. In the 43rd minute, Jason Puncheon for Crystal Palace scored into the Middle/Right part of the goal. In the 60th minute, Wilfried Zaha for Crystal Palace scored into the Middle/Left part of the goal with an assist from Yannick Bolasie.
