Sunderland inflict a first home defeat of 2015 on Everton and in the process secure a huge away victory that lifts them out the relegation zone. Both goals, on 53 and 85 minutes owed a lot to luck, with Danny Graham and Jermain Defoe each netting through deflected efforts they knew little about. Everton piled on the pressure but just could not find a way through thanks to a defensive effort full of spirit and determination from the visitors. The closest the home side came to an equaliser was a well-struck effort from James McCarthy that beat Costel Pantilimon but came back off his right-hand upright.
Everton controlled 66% of the possession, and had 22 shots on goal, with 4 on target. Sunderland controlled 34% of the possession, and had 10 shots on goal, with 3 on target. Two goals for Riyad Mahrez gave Leicester a richly-deserved 2-0 victory over Southampton at the King Power Stadium. The Foxes put on another superb display after taking the lead in only the seventh minute when Mahrez waltzed through midfield and drilled a shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area, and the Algerian was on target again after 19 minutes, converting Jamie Vardy’s pass at close range. Southampton had near-total possession after the break but never looked like scoring, their best chance arriving right at the death when Toby Alderweireld’s goalbound effort was only just blocked by Robert Huth. The Foxes’ fairytale ending to the season looks almost certain now, whereas Ronald Koeman’s men have clearly run out of steam.
Leicester City controlled 39% of the possession, and had 10 shots on goal, with 3 on target. Southampton controlled 61% of the possession, and had 10 shots on goal, with 3 on target. In the 7th minute, Riyad Mahrez for Leicester City scored into the Bottom/Right part of the goal with an assist from Leonardo Ulloa. West Bromwich Albion took the lead with a clinical Victor Anichebe header after 32 minutes but Newcastle United struck back just before the break when Ayoze Perez squeezed a low effort past Boaz Myhill. In the second half, the Magpies had the majority of the pressure but the Baggies had the better of the chances. Chris Brunt should have forced a winner for WBA with 20 minutes remaining, but his volley from close range came flying back off the bar. The point is enough to guarantee West Bromwich Albion’s survival, but for Newcastle, their safety continues to hang in the balance.

A great performance from Stoke led by the in-form Charlie Adam saw off Europa League hopefuls Spurs. Adam opened the scoring with a header when Jan Vertonghen flicked a cross into his path. Steven Nzonzi doubled the lead following a mix up in the Spurs defence. Things went from bad to worse for Spurs early in the second half when Vlad Chiriches was sent off for a second yellow card. Then Mame Diouf made it three with a nice finish and it could have been more if only Marko Arnautovic had been able to apply the final touch to a number of promising moves. Spurs were awful and Mauricio Pochettino will need to have a busy summer.

Aston Villa claimed another vital three points in their battle against relegation with a 1-0 win over West Ham United at Villa Park. Tom Cleverley gave the hosts the lead after half an hour, tapping into an empty net from a yard out after Jack Grealish had slithered into the Hammers’ box and cut the ball back. West Ham made a double change at the half-time interval and improved in the second period. James Collins saw a header tipped over acrobatically by Shay Given while Enner Valencia had a header controversially disallowed for offside, but Villa were deserved winners on the balance of play. Four points above the bottom three with two games left, it will now take something extraordinary to prevent them from being in the Premier League next season.
Aston Villa controlled 56% of the possession, and had 14 shots on goal, with 5 on target. West Ham United controlled 44% of the possession, and had 5 shots on goal, with 1 on target. In the 31st minute, Tom Cleverley for Aston Villa scored into the Middle/Center part of the goal with an assist from Jack Grealish. Hull City’s 150th game in the Premier League ends in defeat to a Burnley side who are relegated today. Burnley have been on a wretched run of form recently and that has ultimately cost them their top-flight status, but they performed admirably today against a lacklustre Hull side who now look almost resigned to the drop. Danny Ings’ goal was enough to secure a rare away victory for the Lancashire outfit and in truth Hull never looked likely to recover.
Hull City controlled 53% of the possession, and had 21 shots on goal, with 3 on target. Burnley controlled 47% of the possession, and had 8 shots on goal, with 2 on target. In the 62nd minute, Danny Ings for Burnley scored into the Bottom/Center part of the goal. Marouane Fellaini’s header 12 minutes from time gives United a victory that all but assures them of a top-four finish. The big Belgian headed home after Julian Speroni made a mess of a cross from the left by Ashley Young. But Palace came out transformed after the break and levelled through Jason Puncheon’s deflected free-kick. David de Gea make two superb second-half saves to deny Glenn Murray and although United hit the post through Daley Blind in the first half they’re a little lucky to be heading home with all three points.
